In 1967 a rich violet-blue transparent type of zoisite was discovered in Tanzania. The stone was named after this, the only country they are found, two years later. Tanzanites are now found in blue, green,yellow, pink, and brwon, but all will change to a blue color when heated. The stone was added to the official December birthstone list in 2004.
