    Description

Native American Persimmon Tree Seeds. The American Persimmon or Diospyros virginiana is native to North America and ranges from Connecticut to Florida and all over the Midwest. It is a member of the Ebony Family. Highly favored by American Indians and settlers in Colonial times it was eaten fresh or dried and cooked into pudding, custard and bread.
The flavor is rich deep and complex. A ripe Persimmon has a taste like caramel with hints of tangerine and heavy cream. The texture is like dense rich custard.
The American Persimmon is an ornamental tree with intensely green leathery leaves that turn purple in Fall. Yellowish white flowers appear in Spring followed by yellowish orange to red slightly flattened 1.5 to 2 inch fruit which stay on the tree into Winter. Fruit is ripe when it turns wrinkled and looks mushy. Like many fruit trees they require a male and female tree to produce fruit. Easy to grow and has richer flavor than the Asian persimmons found in grocery stores. Very sweet when ripe. Open pollinated by bees and provides food for wildlife.
Zones 4 to 9 down to -25 degrees.
