    Description

This incredible copyright 1905 by the Special View Co. shows the USS Bennington Disaster which was a deadly boiler explosion at San Diego,California on July 21, 1905. The front of the postcard has several images: The last rites, the U.S.S. Bennington itself and one of the amazing survivors. John Henry “ Dick” Turpin( 1876-1962)
African American Survivor John Henry Turpin was a sailor in the U.S. Navy. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was one of the first African American Chief Petty Officers in the U.S.Navy . Incredibly he not only was a survivor of the U.S.S. Bennington in 1905, but he also was a survivor from the U.S.S. Maine in 1895. The postcard appears to be in good condition with minor rounded corners and dirt marks and dirt smudges. Corners appear to have sl creases as well as edge-ware and dings. The postcard is postmarked Port Edwards, Wisconsin 1910.
