Tasty edible fruits follow behind the white trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom in May. This bushy vine grows 3-6 ft tall and is native to Arizona. Fruits of the Trumpet Gooseberry can be eaten fresh off of the vine. They make a great addition or main ingredient in jam, jelly, juices, cocktails, cakes or pies.
Expect fruits in 1-3 years.
How to Care for Black Currant Shrub Gooseberry Bushes
Space plants 3 ft apart. Prune annually in spring. Cut shoots 2" from base. Once a year fertilize with a general purpose 10-10-10 fertilizer. Only a couple of tablespoons of fertilizer is needed. Plants will grow in full sun to partial shade.
Germination Procedure:
Cold stratify for 3 months in the freezer prior to sowing. Place seeds on the surface of dampened moist soil. Gently press. Keep seeds and soil moist throughout the germination phase. Seeds germinate in temperatures between 65-75 degrees and under direct sunlight.
