California trailing blackberry is a Non-GMO perennial variety whose fruits turn black when ripe. White flowers appear in spring and shortly thereafter fruits beginning setting by late June. Coastal blackberry is a heavy fruiting bush that forms strong canes and trails 10-20 ft long vines.
It is recommended to support the fruit vines to avoid collecting the fruits off of the ground. Also, because the plant is dioecious (some flowers are male and some are female) you'll want to plant more than one vine seed in the same location.
Some blackberry bushes have big brown pokey thorns and this variety is not one of those. While thorns do appear, they are very small green ones and they appear in minimal amounts. Likewise, this variety is sold online as "thornless".
How to Care for California Coastal Blackberry Vine Plants
Rubus ursinus blackberry is suitable for warmer climates. Just the same, plan to establish the bushes in a semi-shaded area during the hot summer months. Support vines with a trellis, a fence or a tomato cage for easy fruit picking and to maximize leaf aeration.
Bonus: You can plant trailing blackberry in any soil type that allows for proper water drainage to occur. It's nutritional needs are very basic. So, you do not need to purchase expensive soil. And if you notice a lack of vigor, simply add 1 oz of nitrogen to the soil. Aged bushes will be renewed and show a remarkable comeback!
California blackberries make for great fruit fresh off the vine, smoothies, juices, cobblers, pies, tortes and muffins. Blackberries are super-fruits that provide healthy antioxidant power. Grow your own and add them to your cereal and yogurt. Really there are endless possibilities on the fruit uses as they are very sweet.

    Germination Procedure:
Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Scarify the hard seed coating by either rubbing the seeds with sandpaper or adding them to coarse sand in a bag and rubbing them around. After this soak them in water again for 24 hours more. Surface sow in moist soil and spray seeds with a mister. Sow during the spring or summer to get sprouts the following summer. Otherwise, apply 2-3 months of warm stratification and 2-3 months of cold stratification and surface sow the seeds in warm temperatures.
