Yard Long Bean Variety: Red Ripper
The yard-long bean is a Non-GMO heirloom variety of cowpea that has been a dependable American staple for many years. These yard long beans vary from green to reddish in color and are prized in the hot-weathered southern states of America however they grow just fine in temperate climates as well. They cannot withstand a frost however will grow in low-nutrient soil.
There are many varieties of the yard long bean. This variety is a favorite among expert vegetable producers because of it's ability to contend with common pests and diseases and it's superior nitrogen-fixing output in soils. The beans are a delicious nutty flavor as well. Each pod produces about 18 delicious nutty-flavored beans!
To germinate, sow the seeds 1/2 an inch deep into the soil. Keep the seeds and the soil moist and the beans will germinate quickly (usually within 10 days). Once germinated transplant the beans along with the sprouts into their permanent residence (if you didn't start them there already). As long as the bean plants are regularly watered and are receiving proper sun, you will be rewarded with a very hardy harvest with minimal effort and nitrogen-rich soil wherever they were planted.
