April 29, 2022'Custard apple (Annona squamosa Linn.) is an edible tropical fruit, and its seeds have been used to treat "malignant sore" (cancer) and other usage as insecticide.
The sugar apple tree (Annona squamosa) is native to the Amazon rainforest and is hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 9 to 11. It grows to 25 feet in height with an equal spread, and bears fruit that resembles a small purple artichoke. Cut the fruit open and you’ll find white flesh with a custardlike flavor. Grown from seed, the sugar apple will produce fruit within two to three years.
Sugar apple seeds have a relatively long life, having kept well for 3 to 4 years. They germinate better a week after removal from the fruit than when perfectly fresh. Germination may take 30 days or more but can be hastened by soaking for 3 days or by scarifying. Side-grafting can be done only from December to May, requires much skill and the rate of success has not exceeded 58.33%. Shield-budding gives 75% success and is the only commercially feasible method. Seedlings may be budded or grafted when one-year old. Inarching is 100% successful. Cuttings, layers, air layers have a low rate of success, and trees grown by these techniques have shallow root systems and cannot endure drought as well as seedlings do.
Sugar apple seeds may take 30 days or longer to germinate. Speeding up the process is possible, but it cuts down on the percentage of seeds that will germinate. If you choose to accelerate the germination process, treat the seeds before planting by either soaking them in room-temperature water for three days or by scarifying them. Although there are several ways to accomplish scarification – breaking the seed coat – the easiest and safest ways include using baby nail clippers to snip a tiny opening in the seed coat or rubbing the seed between two pieces of sandpaper.
