BSA BOY'S LIFE MAGAZINE: The Magazine for all Boys, now in its eighty-seventh year of continuous publication. Every issue of Boys' Life is packed with what boys like most: sports, hobbies, adventure stories and fun 'n games. Boy's Life (Currently Scout Life) is the monthly magazine of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Its target readers are boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 18. In 1911, George S. Barton, of Somerville, Massachusetts, founded and published the first edition of Boys' Life magazine.
Five thousand copies were printed of the first issue of Barton's Boys' Life, published on January 1, 1911. The more widely accepted first edition is the version published on March 1, 1911. With this issue, the magazine was expanded from eight to 48 pages, the page size was reduced, and a two-color cover was added. In 1912, the Boy Scouts of America purchased the magazine, and made it an official BSA magazine. BSA paid ,000, per subscriber, for the magazine. Feature columns include Electronics, Entertainment, Fast Facts, History, Hitchin' Rack With Pedro the Mailburro, Think and Grin (jokes page), Science, Scouting Around, and Sports. Two columns, Hobby Hows and Collecting, featured Scouts' own personal hobby tips and collections; Scouts were invited to submit stories for these columns and received if they were chosen for publication.
The magazine is still thriving today, building another generation of well read boys who will lead this nation tomorrow!
"MEDICINE MASK"
SLIDE ONLY
W. Ben Hunt (1888-1970) was born in the town of Greenfield, Wisconsin. He was a leader in the outdoor movement and in the reintroduction of pioneer skills. He introduced subjects such as rustic woodworking, whittling and carving, metal working, and historic Indian crafts and lore as hobbies and handicrafts for fun and leisure-time activities. He was involved with the Boy Scouts on a local and national level. Ben Hunt and his cabin are known throughout the world. His writings, with his knowledge and homespun philosophy, have been printed in 26 languages. He wrote more than 20 books and 1000 magazine articles. Under the pen names Lone Eagle and Whittlin' Jim, Ben Hunt was a regular contributor to Boy's Life magazine, the official publication of the Boy Scouts of America.
For your consideration is this magnificent handcrafted Medicine Man ceremonial mask neckerchief slide as described in the Boy's Life. A tribal medicine man, or shaman, would wear a mask similar to this while performing in tribal ceremonies or healing rites. Each tribe had its own medicine men that performed rituals and rites specific to that tribe.
Did you know that certain tribal medicine men made false face masks from living trees to mystify and drive away the evil spirits that caused sickness? Their belief is that if a mask is carved into a living tree, it keeps the spirit of the tree within the mask and it contains very powerful medicine. To baffle the evil spirits, which only had gruesome faces without bodies, and to cure sickness, the masks were carved with horrifying expressions. As the medicine men danced while wearing the masks, the spirits became confused and frightened. They ran away and took the sickness with them.

"MEDICINE MASK"
neckerchief slide from 1960's BOY'S LIFE MAGAZINE Reprint SLIDES OF THE MONTH 30 page brochure.
By a noted expert in the field, W. Ben Hunt, better known as "Whittlin Jim".
Since the early days of the Boy Scouts of America, Neckerchiefs have been used. They were introduced as part of the uniform as identification, as well as the ability to use them for a bandage for First Aid needs. The neckerchief slide has become a way for a Scout to personalize his uniform by using all kinds of decorative slides. From home made to Magnus, Neal and Torchy slides became very popular over the years.
If you collect BOY or GIRL SCOUT STUFF, UNIFORMS, MEDALS, PINS, EQUIPMENT OR LITERATURE y
ou might want to place me in your "FAVORITES" list for the next few months to keep track of these auctions. I have just begun to list similar sets from a collector's hoard dating from the 1920's. I will be listing new lots weekly in the coming months.
This collection belonged to a life-long Scouter who passed away in 2000. He earned his Eagle award about the age of 17, which would make it around 1959 (ish). He spent his life devoted to Scouting serving as Scoutmaster and at Boy Scout summer camps for over 15 years in positions from counselor to eventually camp director.
He was a ten year member and Vice President of the local Volunteer Fire Co., ten year member of the area Hazardous Materials Response Team and the town Tax Payers Association and was an Eagle Scout with Gold & Silver Palms, one of the highest ranks in Scouting.
A bronze palm represents five additional merit badges, a gold palm 10, and a silver palm 15. 1 gold palm and 1 silver palm = 46 total merit badges (21 required + 25 additional)
I cannot divulge his identity because I don't have the family's permission, nor sufficient background information on him.
Condition: This historic slide is already about 60 years old. It is still in very good condition for its age. The only blemish, it is unfinished. It needs the neckerchief loop on the back. Possibly a piece of copper tubing epoxied to the back would do the job.
See pics. As such, they are offered "AS IS, NO RETURNS, NO REFUNDS. Priced accordingly
