Description
One Metropolitan Museum of Art Vaseline Glass Reproduction "Yard of Flannel" Flip Glass.Originally used for the preparation and consumption of flip, a well-spiced rum beverage popular during the early years of trade with the West Indies. A recipe for a potent flip known as a "Yard of Flannel" once accompanied these glasses, but, as its capacity is over one quart, it may be more conventionally used today as a vase. Diamonds between bands of vertical ribbing. Original about 1820. The Met released these glasses in limited editions in a number of colored glasses. The canary yellow glasses are the rarest of the bunch, and the only color that glows in the dark.
Also known as uranium glass, Vaseline glass glows bright green under ultraviolet light, thanks to the uranium oxide added to the glass in its molten state. In natural or indoor light, Vaseline glass has a yellow or yellow-green tinge similar to the color of the old formula of Vaseline petroleum jelly, which is where its name comes from.
Height 6", diameter of rim 4 1/2". Excellent condition, As New.
N.B. Several of the photos illustrating this item show four glasses stacked together on a table. Please note, this listing is for one glass, not four glasses.
