    This
    pink flowering
    , currant fruiting
    perennial shrub
grows in temperate climates across the U.S. and is used in jams, jellies, pies, cocktails, wine-making, non-alcoholic fruit beverages and eaten fresh off the bush. If you are in a temperate-weathered climate you are in luck to be able to affordably
    grow these from seed
! They grow natively in the hills.
Germination instructions: These seeds require cold-moist stratification to germinate. To do this you will need a ziploc bag and either sand or a paper towel as a medium for the seeds to be snugly placed into. Put a moist but not dripping wet paper towel into a ziploc bag and the seeds within the paper towel (or a bit of damp sand). Seal the bag. Place the entire contents into the freezer and forget about them for 4 months. After the 4 months, remove the seeds from this environment and proceed to germinate the stratified seeds normally by sowing them into the ground and keeping the area moist. The idea behind cold-stratifying is to simulate winter, tricking the seeds into thinking that right-there-after, it is an optimal time to sprout for the longest lifespan (Wake up, it's spring!).
