    Testing
    Attempting to
    FULLY
test this tape drive was problematic as there was no tape  available.
Because of this, the item is being listed as a
non-functioning item for parts or possible  repair
    .
Additionally, Windows 9X and above does not support any tape drives in the usual sense; although it may or may not  recognize and display the name of an installed tape drive, depending on the drive and the version of Windows.
Unlike most other devices, for which drivers are readily available and can be installed using the Add New Hardware  Wizard or are recognized through plug and play, tape drives running under Windows depend on device support built  into the backup application itself.
This is why, for example, the Windows 98 Microsoft Backup applet -- an OEM version of Veritas Backup Exec -- can use  some tape drives and not others: the program itself contains drivers for the supported tape drives.
All this really means is that unsupported drives can not be used with the built-in backup applet.
That was not usually a problem because most tape drives were bundled with backup software considerably superior to  the Windows Backup applet.
The testing setup was another challenge.
It consisted of an old Intel Pentium II based ASUS P2B motherboard with a fresh install of Windows 98.
Also located a Floppy Disk cable to (a) install a found copy of Colorado Backup and (b) attach the tape  drive.
After editing the SYSTEM.INI file, the software could receive status from the tape drive.
The software used to test this item was not designed specifically for it -- Online documentation  indicates Arcada Backup Software Program Disks were originally included with the item.
When launching the backup software, the tape drive's indicator light blinked green and the Colorado Software  reported a "Busy..." status.
The status came to rest with a Tape Error indicator -- where other, more successfully tested drives reported only  "No Tape".
As a final attempt to clear the error / investigate | test further, an old version [ 5.1a ] of Backup Exec by Conner  Software was installed.
Attempting to configure the tape drive met with the error or "A tape controller was found, but no tape drive. Check  connections and make sure the drive is powered on."
Without a tape or the original Arcada Backup software, no other function could be tested or alternate testing  avenues be investigated.
    Again,
because of this, the item is being listed as a
non-functioning item for parts or  possible repair
    .
